Course Overview
The English Pre-Sessional (1-Stage) course is designed for international students with an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent. It provides the academic English skills needed to succeed in your studies at the University of Bolton. This five-week intensive programme helps improve your academic writing, reading, speaking, and listening while familiarising you with the UK academic environment.In addition to traditional language skills, we'll introduce you to using AI tools and other computer software to enhance your learning. You'll learn how to use these technologies to improve your language proficiency and academic research skills, helping you excel in your future studies.
If your IELTS score is below 5.5, another Pre-Sessional programme is available.

Entry Requirements
- Undergraduate: IELTS 5.5 (or approved comparable Secure English Language Test) with no skill less than 5.0.
- Postgraduate: IELTS 6.0 (or approved comparable Secure English Language Test) with no skill less than 5.5.
- The Admissions team will provide advice on acceptable SELTs.

In order to determine your suitability for this course as an international student and also to confirm you meet any initial eligibility criteria, we need you to answer a few short questions.
Teaching & Assessment
The course uses a blend of teaching methods, including workshops, group work, and independent study. You'll receive 20 hours of structured contact time per week, focused on developing your academic English skills through practical tasks and assignments. The course also includes training in using AI tools and other educational software to improve language learning and academic research. Assessment is continuous throughout the programme, with a combination of written assignments, presentations, and an exam. You'll also receive individual feedback in tutorials to track your progress.
The university will use all reasonable endeavours to deliver your course as described in its published material and the programme specification for the academic year in which you begin your course. The university considers changes to courses very carefully and the university will minimise any changes. Please be aware that our courses are subject to review on an ongoing basis and changes may be necessary due to legitimate staffing, financial, regulatory and academic reasons.
